Phonetic respelling of “new” + Latin nux ("nut"), literally meaning "new nut."

Morphology

The nunux tree grows up to only 4 meters tall, with rough, dark bark and serrated oval leaves that turn golden in autumn. Its nuts are encased in thick, fibrous shells that usually contain exactly four nunux.
